Waste Accumulation and Community Health

We should store domestic waste in covered bins which are dry. We should segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste in two separate bins.

Waste accumulation and community health

As we go through our daily chores we discard a number of waste materials. They may range from vegetables peels to nuts and bolts.

All the solid waste produced and collected is termed garbage. If you examine the garbage you will find that it can be divided into two parts.

a)      One part is that which rots naturally i.e. it gets broken down or decomposed on its own with the help of bacterial and other micro organisms in the soil. This is said to be `biodegradable’.  This part will have things made of plant or animal matter. For example, kitchen waste, paper, old clothes.

b)      The other part is that which will not rot naturally but stay in the environment for a long time. This is called non-biodegradable. Examples of non-biodegradable wastes are glass, steel and plastics.

Hazardous of waste accumulation

However, it is very important that garbage should be disposed off quickly and in a safe manner so as to cause minimum damage to the environment.

Rain water makes things worse by causing an increase in the growth of bacteria and fungi.

There fore, we must find more efficient ways for storage and disposal of waste to protect human health.

What can you do?

1)      We should store domestic waste in covered bins which are dry. We should segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste in two separate bins.

2)      We should dispose our domestic refuse in garbage dumps which are covered i.e. protected from flies, rodents etc.

3)      Agencies involved should take care that waste is removed as quickly as possible.

4)      Sanitary workers should use gloves, boots and other mechanical devices to protect them against health hazards.

General care

Every family should take care that the waste that they generate is well segregated and disposed off in a proper manner. We must abandon certain age-old methods of disposal and adopt the new waste segregation methods as quickly as possible.

If every individual of the society feels responsible for the place where he/she lives, then every town and city will not only he well maintained, but also well governed.

We should also be ware of not only of our personal well-being, but also of the well-being of our society.
