We Are American

by Jaded Jasmine in Issues, November 21, 2007

The decline in assistance really started taking it’s toll. A tribute to the American way and the suffering we have faced as a nation because of the help we have given so many others.

Life as it were is a strange thing. It is a hard process that leads from birth to death. We try our best to show how much we value this gift yet we almost always wish it gone. Things push us too far in the everyday in this thing most people call the “Rat Race”. How so many of us make it past the urge to commit suicide is beyond me. With the need to have a job, yet no jobs available especially if you have been out of work for a while. The government giving hardly anything to those who would help those who need a home, help with rent or utilities and food.

With so many bills to pay, for those without work or with little assistance, there is just not enough to pay those bills, and what with Bush sending our money to help another country how will we help our own? When does this madness end? How many people will go without just so others may have something? Section 8 can not help those new people who need help because the money got cut to be able to send aide to those who have lost homes, lives and well everything in the tsunami. Where is the money for those who lost homes here in various natural disasters? Certainly there is barely enough to go around for that. Even with food stamps going up now and again to make up for price hikes it is still not enough people have to turn to food banks whose ability to help is growing weak due to the rise in people needing help. Who will help our people when we are all homeless because Bush is trying so hard to help those other countries? We as a country are deep in debt and sinking further, yet on Bush marches giving money our own people sorely need.

Now I have not a lot of room to complain because I was lucky enough to not be effected much by the section 8 cut. It did not stop me from having a home because I was already in a home. Yet my money for utilities will be cut down or out. I may even have to pay rent with no money. I am not concerned with myself however because I have always found a way. It is the families with no homes which concerns me. Mothers and/or fathers with children, single people, married people who must spend their lives in a shelter or in none at all. Giving up privacy and normalcy just to have a roof because the money that is made doesn’t pay the bills or simply there is no job so no money. How can this country take care of them? We are proud to help others, and we deserve to be as one Canadian Reporter states “America has always come to aide others yet no one has come to their aide when they need it.” Please tell me, when can we get help; as we have helped others, have others forgive our debts; as we have forgiven other’s debts? No, we are the example that no one lives by and we only ask for help when the time comes to free others or hunt those who hurt others. We stand proudly not asking for help. We stand by paying back our debts even when it is breaking the back bone of our people.

I stand to be a proud American even as I watch my elderly neighbor struggle through the rest of her years on barely enough. Her medicines are more expensive now then in previous years and she could just afford them back before the raise in price. She takes time to stand in food bank lines which get longer everyday, and because of the lack of food she has to stand in more then one a week. As ill as she is, she shouldn’t be doing this at all but she is a strong person and does what she needs to do regardless. Yet another American who is someone to live your life after, a good decent person who is caring and loving, even to those who do not always deserve it. She is the embodiment of the American way. She shows us how to live strong and proud in our lives and be helpful even when we can barely help ourselves.
If in this world America must be the only one to go to the aide of others then so be it. If we are to be the first to go to the aide and have to fight to get others to help then so be it. Let us sacrifice so others may have what we are coming to not be able to have, because of this sacrifice we have selflessly made. Let us be the only ones aloud to stand tall and look ourselves in the mirror, or the water that our poor wash themselves in.

Let us be the only ones who can say “I am a sacrifice for the world”. So many of us may end our lives or have our lives ended by the elements. This may not matter in the end, but at least we can say “We help the world have that which it can’t have.” or “We live with our debts and forgive others of theirs.” Let us be proud Americans as our people suffer so others may live. Let our men die in war to help others to freedom. Let our people stand proud to know that above all else even our pagans will end in God’s good grace for all they have suffered. Even the lowest of us will stand before God and be able to say, “I am a sacrifice, as was Jesus, please have me so I may know a way of eternal peace.”

We are American. Even at the end of the day when we want to yell at Bush for all he has done, we can still say thank you for making us what we are. The example that a world should live by, yet turns away from. We are American. There are times we all want to give up. Yet we live the way so many have forsaken. We are American. Through all the heartache and pain of loosing so many friends and family members to wars that are not ours or that is our way of saying “NO longer will we stand for Terrorism.” We stand proud, because we are Americans. We deserve to stand this tall because we represent a kind of life that Jesus taught, the teachings that are so often forgotten. To help those in need. Be kindly to your neighbor. Love others as you love yourself. Yet, the most important rule of all, do unto others as you would have do unto you. We are American. We are America.
