Weighty Matters: Why are We Afraid to Live and Think Straight?
Who should we watching our weight? Who should take care of our health? Who should make sure that we drive safely on the roads? Who should manage the environment within which we stay? When shall we realize that war can not solve any of the ills that afflict us? Man is either the most stupid or the most daring of all living organisms. Whichever the case, I believe we have failed terribly.
Nature tends towards destruction, and most importantly, self destruction. The tendency to overindulge is often stronger irrespective of the consequences. Why is man afraid to think straight? Why is man afraid to live straight? Why would we rather break the law instead of doing what is right?
- Exercise and weight loss – Even the most stupid among us know the dangers of being overweight and or obese. Even the most reluctant of minds are aware that obesity increases the risk of cancer, high blood pressure, infertility, heart diseases, and diabetes mellitus among many other preventable diseases. The remedies are all clear before us but we still can not try a little harder to exercise and cut weight!
- Alcohol and cigarette smoking – There isn’t a cancer that isn’t related to cigarette smoking. There isn’t a good side to alcoholism or overindulgence in alcohol consumption, yet despite all this knowledge at our disposal, despite our intellectual capability, we still can not quit cigarette smoking, we still can not quit excessive drinking of alcohol as if our lives depend on these two excesses!
- Environmental management – The reluctance with which industries and nations in general are dealing with the issue of global warming and environmental pollution in general is disconcerting to say the least. The advantages of taking care of our environment for the sake of future generations can not be downplayed. We know it; we have documented evidence but still can not move towards making this a reality.
- Road carnage – The madness on our roads is just horrifying to say the least. Who doesn’t know the dangers of over speeding? Who doesn’t know the dangers of drunken driving? Who doesn’t know the dangers of overtaking other vehicles at corners? All these are basic driving school issues that no driver can dare ignore. Yet we still entertain the madness and lose life after life!
- Salvation – It is evident after all these years that the church can not be trusted when it comes to salvation of any kind. It is evident that the church is more often a source of pain and suffering more than a source of healing, its now evident that religion can not offer man anything new after more than two thousand years of preaching and reaching out, its more than evident that we should be looking for salvation from elsewhere rather than look upon the church in which some leaders would rather molest our children than care for them and guide them towards righteous living, when shall we come to this realization?
- Scientific discovery – It is more than obvious that science creates five problems for everyone that it solves, it is evident that we can not trust scientists to get solutions to mankind’s problems, yet despite the risks and uncertainties that come alongside every day’s scientific discoveries, we still applaud the building of the tower of Babel rather than going back to our roots and trying to right our past wrongs!
- Armament – Who doesn’t know the pain of war? Who doesn’t know the dangers of fighting among nations? Our women and children suffer the most every time nations go to war, we stop all forms of productivity and descend into the worst form of living one can fathom, yet despite the sickness that war creates, the maiming, the deaths, and the underdevelopment that arises from military activity, mankind still wants larger armies and more sophisticated weapons. For whom are we stockpiling? For whom are we arming ourselves? Against whom are we planning vengeance? Nearly all countries in the world have a larger military budget that every other expenditure in times of peace!
These and many other issues need to be tackled for the world to be a better place, yet despite the awesome knowledge that man boasts of, despite the ‘progress’ that mankind has made, we are worse than the most stupid of all organisms on the planet earth.

The main problem is that man thinks he knows better than God on all matters. It started back in the Garden of Eden and continues to this day. The second problem is that man thinks he is invincible.

Hi Leo
Here are just a few words of opinion, if I may. Life is about choices and decisions. We choose to do what we seek fit! Sometimes it’s for the better, and sometimes it’s for the worse. For example I chose not to exercise, its how I am, and nothing will sway me other than my own decision! Just as I chose not to smoke, and drink excessively! What matters is that I stay happy, and ultimately that is exactly what life is really about; survival and happiness.
My ideal of society would be different to yours as we are different people. Every human being is unique and requires a unique environment within society. This is why we make life suit our needs. My life doesn’t require faith ’salvation’, and I believe that war will never end as its human nature to kill our neighbours and control land. We are territorial creatures. Just as human greed will never cease either. That is why government and industry will never end. If industry doesn’t end, the environment will never recover.
It’s all a big pattern and it’s out of the control of the commoner. This is why we can only dictate out own lives. No set of laws, rules, morals and advice can ever truly represent the individual. This is why I hate the law and the government. But I live with it, as I customise life to suit my needs and I’m happy just like that!
Interesting article!

Good points. Dostoevsky talks about this same thing in Notes from Underground. His character says that people will never do what’s good for them because they’re perverse and would rather do what they want.

I loved this article. So much to digest about the world we live in. Some of the things you mentioned we could quite easily control, but other things are not in our hands.
The world is a funny place.

Thought provoking. Me? I have seen scientific discoveries as evil back then. Why? Because it triggers men to do bad. But come to think of it, it is always our decision to do the right thing.

I agree that we usually don’t do what is good for us and I wonder why that is. We are generally intelligent and we know better than to get out on the roads and drive recklessly. We know not to smoke and eat junk, We know to get along with our neighbors and yet we do the contrary. I think we will one day have enough knowledge to do the right thing. That time might be thousands of years away.

Very thoughtful. People tend to create problems and offer solutions and then problems, solutions again…… a never-ending cycle. Some people enjoy benefits and the whole world pay for them.

There is so much to digest in this article and if you look at it as a whole it is so overwhelming. All you can do is your bit to improve yourself and the planet. A very good article.

agree with what you said Shilaho
I guess the reason is we are human beings. There are too many things in our mind, too many things to handle everyday, we just can’t straighten our mind when doing anything, we may, only when we really sit down and think back, why, why, why?
Too late, certain things we still can rectify, certain things, sorry, too late and too bad….oh, oh….no…

Modernization has caught up with man’s morals so to speak. There are too many distractions to thinking straight and making the right turn of the road. But at the end of the day, we are still masters of our fate, captains of our soul.

Man is very selfish. He always think about himself rather the society as a whole.
When he goes speeding on the road, doesn’t he know any moment a precious life can be lost or injured due to his negligent driving? This is one instance.

Shilaho, Its a good article, no doubt. But I do have to disagree with a few points. I believe that many of the points is the way how life goes. Man, as we all know, is an extremely selfish creature and thinks only about himself than other human beings. We can’t change that no matter what. Man will continue to be like that for a really long time to come.
And another point I want to raise is that there is a positive side to everything mentioned (maybe not alcoholism and smoking). Many things mentioned are a result of man’s selfish choices.
Other than that Shilaho, I think its a fine article you have written

I don’t understand how so many people think this article is so insightful. It’s common sense that he put into a list that we all know. We know that people still smoke, drink, drive drunk and etc with all the facts.
We know that throughout the ages religion has killed more people than have given “salvation.”
To be honest I say let people smoke, drink etc because there is 7 billion people on the earth and that number will double to 14 billion then 28 billion faster than people think.
Without a natural predator what better predator than ourselves to monitor population.

I think there are a lot of things in this article that I agree with, and some that I do not. For example, while I am not religious and do not go to church I think its important to respect that some people do get a lot out of going to church and we cannot label all church leaders with the same brush. However I do agree that church is not the only option for salvation and sometimes people should look elsewhere.
Like I said, some very good points there.
