Welfare and Poverty
Poverty seems to be at an all time high. Many people in need are on welfare, but there are those who abuse the welfare system.
I believe the welfare system is a good thing for those in need of a helping hand. It seems poverty is at an all time high because of all of the people losing their jobs. According to the National Center for Law and Economic Justice, more than 1 out of 8 people in the USA is living in poverty. Also more than 1 out of 20 people in the USA are living in deep poverty with income below half the poverty threshold. This is the highest rate of deep poverty in 32 years.
I do need to bring up a subject that has been bothering me. What about the people who take advantage of the welfare system? Yes, there are people out there who do this. I have no problem with working hard and my taxes helping those who really need it. On the other hand, I have a hard time helping those who don’t make an effort to help themselves. What I mean by this is that there are folks out there that live off welfare and make no effort to get a job. Wouldn’t it be great to get paid and not work? Most of us like the idea. But for most of us that’s not reality. This is unfair to those who work hard, pay taxes, and still struggle to pay bills.
I’m not saying I’m above those who are on welfare. My family has been on welfare before, but both my husband and I worked. Welfare is there to get you through the hard times until you can make ends meet reasonably.I would like to thank all the taxpayers in our country for helping those in need. Hopefully someday poverty won’t be such a devastating fact.

The whole welfare system needs to be overhauled. It was started to help those in need to get back on their feet, not to provide a lifetime of help for many. It is abused and overused. If people have to take a drug test to apply for a job, then welfare recipients should have to take random drug tests to be able to receive it. A good article and subject that has been long overdue to be addressed. Well done friend.
