What is Conservation?

What dose conservation mean in design?

Conservation areas

By law, every local authority must from time to time determine whether any parts of their area are areas of special architectural interest or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.  Designating such areas as ‘conservation areas’.

When a conservation area has been designated, special attention has to be paid in all planning decisions to the preservation or enhancement of the area’s character and appearance.

In 1985 there were over 5,500 conservation areas in England, ranging from the whole of the centres of such historic sites as Chester to parts of small villages such as Mottram-in-Longdendale in Tameside.
