When I Decided to be Straight

It was the usual forum discussion about homosexuality speckled with anti-disciple-of-Christ innuendo, flame, stereotyping and more. Eventually the fact that homosexuality is a choice was attacked and the following question was aimed at me: “When did you decide to go straight?” By His grace God gave me an answer that went unchallenged.

Over the course of recent decades society has been amplifying certain assumptions like, “that person cannot help but to be that way” or, “they were born that way,” to justify sinful actions. Some of these assumptions that are now used for homosexuality* had also been used for drunkeness. Drunkeness used to be a sin. So called science has classified it as a disease. God’s Word is final: It is a sin.

The same dark force that moves upon people to justify drunkeness, abortion, and other sins is now readily accepted by much of society in regard to homosexuality. In recent years the theory was advanced that homosexuals are born that way and, of course, there was a “scientific study” to prove so. Well, there soon came another study to disprove that theory. I really take no stock in such studies, even if they prove a Biblical point.

What I do stand upon is the infallible Word of God. If people would take the time to slowly and respectfully read it they would find the following in regard to homosexuality:

1. Man** was created good (Genesis 1:31), but willfully chose to disobey God (1 Timothy 2:14).

2. This act of sin infected all descendants of Adam (1 Corinthians 15:22), causing all to have a sinful nature.

3. Homosexuality is a sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

4. In the eyes of God, in at least one aspect all sin is the same (James 2:10-11), it must be dealt with (Romans 6:12), and God has made for its removal.

5. One must surrender to Christ, permitting Him to constantly dwell within (Romans 10:9-10, John 15:4).

6. Whether one surrenders to Christ or not, they have a limited free will.

On that last point, consider the demon possessed that met Christ (like Matthew 8:28-34). These were possessed by satan***, but they CHOSE to encounter Christ Who delivered them. Add this fact to it: Christ healed those who CHOSE to come to Him (Matthew 15:30). My point is this: Even if it could be ever “proven” that some are born homosexual, Christ can crush the sin nature and heal the person, provided they choose to surrender to Him.

To assume that humans are incapable of making lifestyle changes degrades them to a point even lower than an animal. We are not sock puppets.

The question posed to me about when I decided to be straight is based upon the false assumption that sexual orientation is determined at conception. Nevertheless, here is my answer: everyday! Though I surrendered to Christ in 1970, everyday I must choose to walk in Him. All disciples of Christ are spiritually buffeted by temptation, the influence of the world, satan, and their own sin nature that wants to rear its ugly head. I choose to be straight everyday, for I choose Christ.

One more point. The question aimed at me assumes my walk in Christ is just religion, or is based solely on a dedication prayer. This exposes the fact that many have no real idea what it means to be a true disciple of Christ. It is much more than religion or uttering a onetime emotional prayer. It is a continual relationship with God through Christ, and it is most wonderful. I encourage you to join me in this walk.

* The term includes lesbianism.

** This term is used in the traditional sense, referring to all humans regardless of gender.

Amen Brother Pete, great write. Some may protest this article but we who know Christ know that no matter what sins people struggle with, they can be overcome, if they are willing to repent and allow the Lord to direct their paths.

Yes, homosexuals can change. I once read about a man who did and later got married. It can be done with God´s help.

Homosexuality is a sin. What I can’t understand is why certain churches say this is not in the Bible. Talk about lying.. Amen to this write-up!

You are so so right. To be drunk is a sin and science says it’s a disease. That’s why AA and 12 Step programs are no good. We have to be convicted of sin, and if the12 steps don’t include repentance from the sin of drunkenness then folks relapse continually. Do you agree?

I am personally not a religious person, even though I like to study and read about different religions. However, again, I couldn’t agree with you more Mr. Macinta. Modern day liberals say homosexuals are “born”, then why is that all of a sudden ever since the topic became popular, a huge amount of homosexuals are emerging out of nowhere? Why is it that men who were once leading perfectly straight lives, are all of a sudden indulged in this new “lifestyle”? Because people are like animals. We copy what others do and whatever the popular subject might be at the time, we want to be involved.
Homosexuality might be a sin from a religious point of view, but from a human point of view it is not natural. Human beings are designed since conception to be heterosexual creatures.

In a way, I agree. Like Klevi, I am not a religious person, yet I respect other’s beliefs. But in a non-religious view, it is nearly impossible for one’s sexual preference to be determined at birth, when sexual feelings do not emerge until adolescence. It is natural for a being to be curious about intimacy with the same sex, and maybe even try to experience it. This is why it was once rare, and unheard of. To be “gay”, in my opinion, deprived from when people were caught in the act of said curiosity. Then, labeled as homosexuals or gay, they were shunned, and accepted that as themselves, merely because of other’s opinions on that person. Over the years, people started feeling sympathy for “homosexuals”, who really just accepted what others made them believe they were for one “wrongful” act. Eventually, people began to brainwash themselves in order to have originality that they were “born that way”, or “naturally gay/bi.” And to this day, the acceptance of those who can call themselves gay or bisexual is basically required to exist as an acceptable human being in society. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. Just because you either want to be different, or you were brain-washed into being a homosexual, I must accept you as something you’re honestly not? Curiosity was given to human beings for a reason, but I am very skeptical that a person could be strictly gay or claim they’re “bi-sexual”, (generally because they don’t HATE the experience.) I would NEVER demonize a person for their experiences, but I will not petition for equality of something that someone only BELIEVES they are. (Granted, many don’t agree with my opinion for religious reasons. They say “Experiences alone are a sin, and not to be tolerated.” Yet all human beings “sin.” In no way is this any more or less severe than other “sins” within the Holy Bible.)
