When is Abortion Justified?

There are some cases when abortion can be justified. Which are they?

This example clearly has no definitive answer. Whether abortion is justifiable or not varies greatly from situation to situation, so all of the circumstances should be taken into account.

Poverty and inability to take care of a child are reasons to have it aborted. Are they justifiable? Probably yes. A woman with absolutely no means to take care for even a goldfish let alone a child should seriously consider abortion. Even though she also has an option of adoption, what are realistic chances for that anyway? It is said that a woman attaches greatly to her unborn child throughout her pregnancy, so imagine this poor woman giving away the only thing that could matter to her, because she has nothing. It is not going to happen. Or if she really is willing to put her baby for adoption, where will she find adoptive parents? The process of adoption is extremely complicated and so the child has good chances to stay with his ill – equipped, incapable mother with no means to support him. What is to become of this child? But is it really justifiable to have abortion just because a child will grow up in an unhealthy environment? Again, this is a subject that has to be greatly debated before the final verdict can be determined. If that can happen at all.

In all of the examples described above, it could be more or less argued that abortion is justifiable. But to be able to understand the difference between various cases, between those where some sort of justification can be achieved and those where there are no reasonable arguments for abortion by any stretch of imagination, we must take a look at some of those.

I am sure you know about the law in China that prohibited people to have more than one child. When women found out they were expecting a girl, they aborted. Why exactly would they do this is beyond my understanding and a topic for another discussion, but these events are definitely not rare and do not happen only in China. Now compare this to the examples described above and you will see a clear difference. To abort a baby just because you do not like his or her gender is immoral and unjustifiable.

The same could be said about women who want to pursue their career and abort because a child would stand in their way of achieving their goals, although they have all the means to raise him.

However, I still believe that abortion should be given as a choice to all women. In reality, it would be impossible to divide those with justifiable reasons and those who are just selfish and see a child as an inconvenience, so I firmly support pro – choice. If a woman thinks her reasons to have an abortion are justifiable, than she should have every right to do it. Without people around her judging her for what she did. Who knows what they would do in her position.
