Who Should Fight World Poverty?

If anybody is to fight world poverty, it’s the Christians; their God says so.

Another issue that’s taking a toll upon many in the world is hunger. Countless people experience hunger due to poor irrigation systems or droughts and plagues, thus causing many to become victims of malnutrition. This was true in West Africa in 2004, where the food shortage, caused by the drought and locust plague, destroyed much of the harvest; killing numerous civilians. Back in 2005, “the U.N. World Food Program warned that more than 3 million people in drought-plagued Ethiopia face[d] hunger this year unless the country receives emergency food aid” (Katel). For Christian’s, helping the starving is a priority and a commandment from their god and according to the bible. In the Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 15:11 reads, “For there will never cease to be poor people in the land; that is why I am commanding you, ‘You must willingly open your hand to your afflicted and poor brother in your land.’”. Within the world, there are over 850 million people living undernourished and more than 90 percent of those people live in extreme poverty (Mercy Corps). Throughout the Holy Bible, it’s clear that the Christian lifestyle is centered on helping the poor and needy. Consequently, a Christian who opposes to lend their hand to the poor will be oppressed and cursed. Therefore the anti-poverty team must consist of every Christian upon this earth; for without them tragedy may strike twofold- for the impoverished as well as the Christian’s.
