Why Children Are Victims of Violence?

One must not cause any harm to a child or to a woman or even to an old person. I was taught this when I was in a primary school. My parents cited examples from the films of Charlie Chaplin to illustrate that how this great film-maker had favored women and children in his movies. I was a devoted fan of Charlie. It is a fact that children are easy victims of violence and abuses. I have essayed to find out what are the reasons behind this.

• Siblings of the human beings are the weakest among all the living entities and they demand considerable attention and care to grow up. A baby takes ten to twelve months to stand and much more time to walk. For a few months after the birth a child live on liquid only. Separation from his/her mother at that period may cause an end to his/her life. This is the greatest natural limitation that we find in a child. And this is a reality in his/her life when he/she does not at all understand what is what.
•  Most of the parents of the vast mass of the children are not happy. They are not satisfied with the life they are to live. Majority of the parents are deprived of much of the pleasure that life may have awarded them. They are utterly poor and they are to live in wretched condition. They are not empowered at all. They are generally jobless and this means that they cannot earn. Even if they find a job they are paid little. They are to pull on under the curse of unemployment or under-employment. Hence health and education are things of distant dreams to them. Thus they are primarily challenged. In such poverty-stricken families the children are always to suffer.

• You must have noticed children in the railway platforms or in the infamous slums of any under-developed or developing country. You must have noticed how they fight with each other for the left-out food. Some of them sweep the floor of the running trains. Some of them move to polish your shoes. Some of them are trapped by the underworld elements. Some are regular victims of sexual abuse. They become friendly with alcohol and drugs. They are always hated and the suppressed personality of this unfortunate growing human finds venting in all kinds of destruction. This is a great loss for all of us as we do not receive their services for the development of our good earth.
• In every country it has been an accepted tradition that children should be punished physically and mentally for any of their faults. Parents and seniors of the society believe that such practices are for the benefit of their kids. Thus children who are fortunate to get admitted into an educational center do not suffer less. They belong to the families of the people who have assured regular earning. Children in the educational centers are suppressed in the name of discipline and in the name of grooming. They are not allowed to grow in the most natural way of their own disposition. The teachers misread their mind most of the times. Children are insulted and injured at a stage of sprouting personality.

• We have allowed violence to rule over our environment. You will find marks of violence in every sphere of modern life. People of all cross-sections are prey to coercion of one form or other. Greed has been attached to hunger and wealth describes enormous wealth. In the race to champion in every sector of pleasure and security violence has been shared by the wide mass of humanity all over the world. And there is terrifying absence of love. It is hard to predict to which direction we are leading our children in such a state of affair.
