Why Do You Hate Gay Marriage?
Opinion piece on Gay Marriage and Prop eight here in California.
It’s been long said that what happens behind closed doors should stay behind closed doors. What about the doors at places of worship? Why is our modern government so heavily focused on Christian values when there are so many other religions in this country? Why are ideas like Prop 8 so widely accepted when they are clearly unconstitutional? Is it fair that we frame modern politics around the Bible because the majority of the population follows the teachings of the Holy Trinity?
First of all, I have nothing against God, I just don’t like his fan club. I have never been much of a religious person but after a year at a Catholic school I found i wasn’t in agreement with the Christian way of life. I don’t wish to put down people for their beliefs anymore than they put down mine, all i wish is to inform others on my opinion pertaining to the separation of church and state.
In my lifetime i have seen many things change, a lot of little twists on the past and a few new ideas. The most influential moment was the outlawing of gay marriage. This action made me question the separation of church and state more than anything in the past. Why couldn’t two people who love each other not get married? The answer was ignorance. It is quoted in the bible that a man should not lay with another man, and this was the catalyst for this bill. There are many good moral values in the Bible. I don’t believe it is the word of God, but a collection of stories each containing a value you should follow in your life. One could almost worship Aesop’s Fables in the same context. Why gay marriage? There is no such thing as traditional marriage anywhere except the church, so establishing traditional marriage in a legal sense? Is this not unconstitutional?
If it is lawful to look at the Bible for reasoning behind the courtship of two people than i motion that we look towards another passage from the Old Testament from the book of Deuteronomy 22:13-21 which states that if a woman wishes to be married and is not a virgin then she shall be brought in front of her fathers house and stoned to death. Why is it alright to quote only the passages that help your own biased ideas while forgetting to bring up the passages that show flaws in your ideology?
Despite the fact that a majority rule instituted this bill, I believe that this bill should be revisited and established that marriage can only be established between two people who love each other despite their gender. Otherwise, we should bring all the unmarried Christian non-virgin women and stone them infront of the House of worship they attend so that their “father” can witness.
