Why Smoking Should Be Banned

Reasons why smoking should be banned.

In the United Kingdom people complain about the health service. Not enough GP’s and sometimes there is a need to wait for weeks for an referral appointment. The NHS (The health service in the UK) spends every year £1.4 and £1.7 billion on smoking related illnesses. Every day 1000 patients are admitted into hospital because of smoking related illnesses. Just imagine how many beds it would free up if there would be no smokers anymore. I know that if they would stop smoking that it would not immediately make things better but eventually it would. It would free up the health service in the UK and other countries.

So why does the government allow smokers to continue. Well for the start because in the UK the government collects every year £9 billion an tobacco duty. But with the cost of smoking rising in the UK and the flights into eastern European countries falling many people actually buy cigarettes abroad for which the government actually doesn’t get any tax duty.

On tobacco plantations children as young as 3 are working every day to provide the tobacco needed for cigarettes. I personally think that this is a disgrace and the tobacco companies should be fined for this. But often they blame the contractors and avoid any responsibility.

Smoking is also one of the biggest polluter. In a cigarette there are around 4000 chemicals and 400 toxic substances. These chemicals and toxic substances are then filtered and what is done with the cigarette filter? Its thrown away. Often simply on the road and eventually ends up in landfill sites.

There are so many other reasons why smoking should be banned some of them are:

  • Non smokers suffer under the smoke especially children.
  • Smoking is addictive.
  • It is more likely that smokers use other drugs than non smokers.
  • Smoking is a fire hazard and starts thousands of fires which fills thousands of people every year

So lets all get together and try to get the governments to declare tobacco as illegal substance.

Smoking should be banned in the U.S. and the U.K. etc). It is a proven fact that cigarettes are addicting and deadly. I agree that Tobacco should be banned permenantly. Despite who is addicted, they need to force themselves to stop, or get into a program that helps them quit. These countries won\’t ever be better ( that is healthier) until tobacco is banned.

It’s bad to keep the smoking. But, it’s very adicting. You can stop them. Even if it becomes illegal, people are gonna make ciggerettes and then gonna sell it like people do with drugs.

there are plenty of really good reasons why smoking should be banned, but people have a right to be able to if they want to. i think it should just be banned in public places, and smokers need to learn to be responsible smokers, my mom is a smoker, and as much as i dislike it, i know that she is responsible about it, she doesnt smoke more than a pack a week and she never smokes around anyone else. this is what i think all smokers should learn to do.

  35. skylar :)

    On April 16, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Smoking should be banned because second hand smoke effects the people around you and can cause cancer or lung problems for them as well even if theyve never smokes a ciggaret in their lives.

Ciggaret butts are also non-degratable and since smokeing is banned in buildings, most smokers smoke outside where there arent usually ashtrays available. There for they throw them on the ground and thats littering.

    On May 5, 2009 at 9:01 am

    Isould be banned.
It is too dangerous for the second hand smokers.
They didn’t do any thing wrong but their health is being attack by those who smoke isn’t fair.

    On July 15, 2009 at 4:29 am

Yeah i also think smoking should be banned. I\’m a teenager and my mates smoke around me every weekend and i choose not to, it\’s there choice but i often think that they don\’t really take in the damage it is causing to their bodies. they often say that it\’s alright because they just do it on weekends while they drink and thats okay, but i don\’t think they are really thinking about the future at all. if smoking is banned i know most of these people probably will stop because ciggies will be alot harder to get their hands on it..
Also if the government chooses not to ban it then they should at least make it extremely expensive in order to put people off smoking, because it will be costing people too much money to buy smokes, especially teenagers

Hi my name is James O’Connor
Smoking becomes fashionable in the world today to condemn smoking. However, although I feel that smoking can be harmful, I think it should be banned completely. A further point is that governments throughout the world make huge profits from levying taxes on cigarettes. This provides funds which are used for building schools, hospitals and other public amenities. In general, I think the world would be a better place without cigarettes. However, the decision as to whether to smoke or not should be for each individual to make.

what are the advantages of smoking?

    please answer this question

  44. Sage

    On February 22, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Smoking is the cause of 1 out of 5 deaths, globally. it also gives a greater chance of blood cloths, leading to the hear. This gives a greater chance for heart failure, and or seizure. In the US, 23% of all male adults (18+) are smoking, that is quite a bit. Also 20% of women in the US smokes. Every 8 seconds somebody dies from smoking. (fact)

  45. Sage

    On February 22, 2010 at 1:31 pm

There are no advantages of smoking. In the beginning, a feeling of relaxation, and ease, but both of them quickly subside, and give way to the need of tobacco. Furthermore, 10 million cigarrets are sold a minute. People withouth future plans are more likely to become smokers.

    blood cloths = blood clots

Smoking is responsible for 1 out of 5 deaths in the US.
    Globally 1 out of 10

I belive that smoking should be banned. I realize that people can smuggle in cigarettes, but the cops can catch them. Also many people who do smoke, are older. They may not have the guts to smuggle in cigarettes, I think they will realize that they are better without smoking.

remember people its a freedom of choice. if for example the prohibition.i am sure that would instantly happen once it got banned. think about it a person that enjoys something doesn’t want to lose it. but the person would have to have something to fill the void where cigarettes came involved.

It’s a tricky move to ban smoking. Many jobs were created because of the tobacco industry. Governments benefit from the tax from these companies. I also wrote an article regarding this at

get rid of it. its gross, and a very bad example to children. Once its banned it will slowly vanish to the people that still have some. And once its gone, its gone. :)

Is everyone responding to this article poorly educated? All of you can barely spell and construct a sentences. Perhaps you should have some better education before voicing opinon and most responses repeat the last.
Now I am a non-smoker and I don’t condone smokers for their choice. I do however condone the industry. The amonia chemical added by the industry enhances addiction and is a primary source of the addiction in smokers, not the niccotine. It makes the quiting of smoking extremly difficult. So why does the industry get away with this discusting corporate evil? Tax of course. High paid lawyers and executives rigging the system. In this world, the law is manipulated by the intelligable wealthy. While idiots (like above) form a regurgitated generic opinon, the coropration wins. You cant fight a battle with blunt swords. You need education, wisdom and wit.
As we become comfortable with the way things are, the smoking may annoy us but becomes less of a priority when it comes to concerns of agenda in the everyday vote. We constantly worry ourselves with the economy and interest rates when voting while other big issues get ignored.
A happy voter is one that will watch TV. Be interested in only hollywood gossip and cheap news that tell us what we want to hear or anger us with silly trivial local news.

My opinion is get better education and quit forming generic opinions. TV feeds a generation of idiots and forms a complacent society. TV is also an addiction we need to fight as it dumbs down nations and prevents us from fighting corporations that literally can do as they please.

Hands down smoking is very bad, its like a killer giving his weapon of choice to you and letting you kill yourself. It should be Illegal and took off the market for good. Cigarettes or any tobacco product falls hand to hand with crack, meth, pot, and any other dangerous drug…..They should be a thing of the past

I do think smoking is bad but, should we really have a say in what people say about their heath? I do not agree with smoking in public some people might have asthma problems, smoking at home is fine. but if there are younger children they should see child services. Canada is free, would it be any different of where we have a certain diet we had to eat from?

You can not ban smoking. I don’t smoke but I think that the government it getting a little too much envolved inpeoples life. It’s their choice and free will to smoke. If it’s such a big deal for some non smokers then they need to by a mask or dilter to where on there face. Between the somking and contoling what people eat the government is getting awful.
