Why Women Have to Stay in Cowsheds?
by It is a real pain to see women staying in cowsheds during their periods in some villages of Kullu.
The beautiful district mentioned above is also known as valley of Gods. One can never go tired of admiring the natural beauty of Himalayas here. Whenever I visit the remote rural places in these heights, it somewhere hurts deep inside to see some ladies staying in cowsheds. It is an age old tradition to make them stay outside or inside cattle sheds during their menstrual periods.
The women are considered impure during these few days and so are not allowed to stay inside their homes until the time they go pure. In the above picture the lady is sitting outside cattle shed waiting for these days to pass and seek shelter inside her home after getting a bath.
It often makes me think
that during the days
when a very natural phenomenon is happening
do they equate women to cattle?
or is it simply
a display of their orthodox
mentalties!
