Working Conditions for Laborers

Essay about the working conditions for laborers in the rise of modern America.

The working conditions for laborers during the times of the rise of modern America have been awful. Families are being forced to work, rather than just the father; the conditions in these evil factories are terrible. We also have an inside story today, from the Triangle Factory, which displays the evil of modern laboring. The managers of these factories are doing nothing about the safety of their workers, and should be dealt with harshly.

These factories are making not only the men work, not only the parents work, but even the children. With such an excessive amount of people needing a job, these factory owners are paying very low; forcing the entire family to work for wages which should be expected from one man. The women are not even respected in their jobs. They are barely paid, and not at all to begin with. Women with sewing jobs are not being paid until they are experts. They are then charged for the use of their sewing machine. These people can easily be replaced, so one complaint is immediate loss of their job. Children also have bad, harsh jobs. A common job for children is working at the coal mines. All they do, from 7:00 A.M. to dark (for only about $1-$3 per week and very curvy spines from bending down so much) is separate coal lumps from rocks. Factory owners are working their laborers to death.

The factories themselves aren’t exactly the gates of heaven either. They are very dangerous, and killing hundreds of people. The factory owners will sacrifice anything, including human lives, for extra money. They keep workers crowded together to not have to pay for extra space. They objected to spending more money on fire escapes and sprinklers. Fires claim the most lives of anything in the factories, yet the owners still won’t spend that extra penny to save their workers’ lives. These factory owners are allowing their workers to die, just for extra profit.

We have inside information about laboring in the Triangle Factory. Most salaries are currently about $9 per week, with the most experienced earning about $12 per week. Younger workers, around 13 years of age, are currently earning about $6 per week. Deductions from this salary include the cost of thread and electricity, the chairs they use, and even using the coat lockers. The hours at this particular factory are from 7:30 A.M., until 6:30 P.M. when not busy, and until 9:00 P.M. when it is. Workers are expected to work at least 59 hours per week. The factory owners would sometimes set back the clocks to avoid paying for overtime hours. The workers are locked in by a huge steel door, which is a huge fire hazard, not allowing them to escape. Obviously, with all the dry fabric etc., this factory is in huge risk of a deadly fire; yet the only firefighting supplies they have are a few hundred water pails scattered throughout the factory’s many floors. Either the owner of the Triangle Factory was crazy, or he didn’t care about hundreds of people dying because he cared more about that extra penny..

Apparently, the factory owners are insane. They are paying laborers so low that entire families are being forced to work. They are being worked so hard that the children, for example, are bending over so much in their jobs, that their spines are curving. People are also dying every day, because these factory owners are too greedy to buy fire precautions. They are letting tons of people suffer just because they want the extra profit. We also have hard evidence that factory owners are mistreating their laborers, as you can see from out Triangle Factory report. These Modern American Factories are killing Americans, for a factory owner’s profits.
