Wyoming Strikes a Blow Against Domestic Terrorism – Almost

Wyomingites, in a display of the common sense for which they’re noted, sought to deny a public forum sponsored by their tax dollars to domestic terrorist, Bill Ayers. They would have succeeded but for the intervention of a liberal federal judge.

PINE BLUFFS – In Wyoming, as winter began its inevitable retreat, and deep snows covering the steep slopes of the Absaroka, Big Horn, Medicine Bow, and Teton Mountain ranges started to melt, feeding life-giving water to the high plains desert  below, the citizens of the “Cowboy State” attempted to strike a blow against domestic terrorism.

Known for their common sense approach to life’s problems, these hardy folk tried to deny a public forum to a radical leftist, William Charles “Bill” Ayers,” thereby temporarily halted him from using their University – the University of Wyoming in Laramie – to spew his anti-American poison into the minds of their kids.  Only the intervention of  Chief Judge William F. Downes, a  liberal federal judge appointed to the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming by former Democrat President William J. Clinton in 1994,  stopped them.

So who, exactly, is Bill Ayers, and why was he Persona non grata in Wyoming? Why did hundreds of citizens and politicians, including the State’s governor, raise objections to a speaking engagement by a man who is a friend of the present  President of the United States, a “respected” teacher at mid-western college, and a central figure in the presidential election of 2008?

Bill Ayers is presently a teacher at the U. of Illinois – Chicago. That school, a bastion of liberalism, lists him as a “distinguished professor of education and senior university scholar, and a member of its Executive Committee Faculty Senate.” This branch of the University provides Ayers with a platform for his hate America propaganda. From its classrooms, Ayers teaches – or indoctrinates – scores of young, impressionable students annually to hate America. The man is probably tenured, and his classrooms and all the facilities at that school are paid for by taxpayer funds – the very same taxpayers he and his philosophy seek to subjugate to the whims of communism. He’s something else!

This former domestic terrorist, this remorseless killer, this founding member of the Weather Underground Organization (WUO), has the audacity to believe that his stale  message – that the U.S. government must be overthrown by force and violence – is still relevant today.

Wyoming’s problems with Ayers began when its University’s Social Justice Department, a privately endowed center that studies problems of “oppression and inequalities among different racial groups” - just whose definitions of these problems it uses, and who, exactly, is privately endowing it,  is anybody’s guess and is probably something that the light of day should be brought to bear on – issued an ill-advised invitation to Ayers, a ’60s and ’70s radical leftist, to speak on campus. Ayers was to give two talks in April. The first, “Trudge Toward Freedom: Moral Committment and Ethical Action,”is laughable considering the man’s background. One wonders if this title was not suggested to him by Judge Robert Bork’s wonderful book, “Slouching Toward  Gomorrah.” The second, which was to be given to faculty and graduate students, “Teaching and Research in the Public Interest,” plays fast and loose with the term “public interest.”
