You are Guilty Until Proven Innocent

I think we need to rethink the words we say.

If you have been arrested before, you probably heard something like this. “You are innocent until proven guilty You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say, can, and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand your rights?” My answer would be no.

I’ve never been arrested, nor convicted for anything. I do not hate police officers. In fact, I want to become a one. I do have a problem with reading the first line in the “rights” though. “You are innocent until proven guilty” Until then, I am going to treat you like you are guilty. I am going to put you in hand cuffs and throw you in the back of the squad car. Of course, most civilians are going to lie. But why can’t police officers be truthful.

“You are guilty until proven innocent.” You are being treated like you are guilty. You are put in hand cuffs, and put in a jail cell. But, your innocent. You are bored, cold, hungry, thirsty, and tired, but, you are innocent. Why cant jails have a catering service. You would have to pay but, the food would be nice. Even if you are really guilty, the line says “innocent until proven guilty” So treat me like a person, not a prisoner.

What a totally unique spin on it! But truly you are “neutralized” until you are proven innocent or guilty. And you must admit that the due process will “neutralize” equally the innocent and the guilty until the process is done. And that’s my story (And I’m sticking to it) smile.
