You’re Not Going to be The Boss
Yeah, I’m not kidding. I can guarantee that you will not step up to the ladder of leadership before you read this.
If you are the kind of guy who always do what everyone else told, believe me, you will not be any leader. Being a leader, require you to live like a tiger. Always moving up, hunting, and fighting. You need to stand out of the crowd so that people recognize you. Otherwise, you just end up as a follower. Surely, being follower is not bad. If there’s no follower, there’s no leader. But I believe you will never expect to spend the rest of your life being told to do something by your superior.
Even if your Papa is the leader of an organization and you are about to inherit his position, it will not ensure you to be leader. The real leader is not born from a huge amount of money and some support of nepotism. Real leader made from long time learning, understanding, and sometimes sacrificing. You will never imagine the big responsibility in your shoulder as you are step up to CEO’s desk. Even a little mistake can punish you and cost your credibility.
Obviously, think of being a leader is much simpler than be the one. But if you want, here are some useful advices for me. Keep in your mind that these rules apply for all kind of organizations, whether you want to lead an enterprise, Italian gang, soccer club, or even Boy Scout.
1. Close your eyes
When you enter an organization and dreaming of leading it someday, you need to close your eyes. It means you have to accept the organization as it is. Give full commitment and support to the organization’s vision and mission. Do not waste your time by talking about how bad your organization is and trying to against the flow inside. Instead, use your maximum adaptability and assimilate with people there. Once you come inside the power structure, you can change the organization as you want it to be. There are so many people outside trying to change their environment by their mouth and not by their actions. That’s why their end up being a follower for their whole life.
2. Keep your stability
This is a must. The more you stable the more people will trust you, and TRUST is what leader really need. Be consistent and don’t be a mess with your personal life. Act like a grown up man and not like high school teenager who spend up whole night in the striptease club. At some point in your life, get married. I don’t know why but a man who has a domestic life is move faster to the top than a single guy. They also more motivated to make money since they have some kitties to be fed at home.
3. Give reward if necessary
I understand that your ambition to the top is higher than ever but you should understand no matter how gifted you are you cannot change the world by yourself alone. So get and use your partner. Explore idea from anyone, make it happen, and when it succeed do not forget to give them credit. You will get two benefits by doing it: you being recognized as the one who make it happen and you got the respect from somebody whose idea you’ve stolen.
4. Watch your way
As you are climbing the ladder of leadership, you will meet other people. Some of them are in the way up and the rest is heading down. Make sure you are in the right group. If you are aiming to be a vice president and build a relationship with the janitor instead of your supervisor, then I can be sure that you ready to jump down. Choose the right friend, to whom you spend your time with. Once you in to the right group don’t make a mess and fooling around, so they won’t kick you out.
5. Have your own opinion
Whether it’s about football game, politic event, presidential election, or something, you need to define your own thought. It’s very important; otherwise, no respect will grow in your colleagues and followers. Having an opinion about something will makes you look professional. It also shows that you are a man who has a core value inside, and you will not distracted by your surrounding environments. Your opinion about certain issues must be honest, something that come from inside. You don’t need to speak up words that make everyone happy. Remember, you don’t need love from your followers; all you need is their obedience.
