Approaches in Teaching ESL

Some methods that are widely used.

ESL is styled around grammatical explanations, presentation to learners and staff wanting to learn techniques and activities, which consolidate that information. Some students base their learning on preferred activities but those should complement the study part of the lesson. In other words showing grammatical tables is not enough in itself and activities that are not tied into a grammar base are useless especially if the person does not know what he is saying. In addition activities are more fruitful once the rule is applied to the learner in a question answer period, let us say, so that they will be more cognisant of how to use it during an activity like role-playing.

There are other models that I have used especially when starting a conversation class with people I do not know. Breaking the ice with simple conversation is a definite plus. I usually get the person to introduce himself and like to have a few sheet of paper, which give an outline for the discussion, grammar and vocabulary of the day. Often enough the new ESL dies not integrate new grammar into a discussion or is ill prepared to incorporate new words from the outline. Better lessons will have the teacher incorporate applicable words and grammar to certain situations that are raised during the conversation and it is often unnecessary that he get everyone to understand it clearly. This is especially true for the slower learner who might take advantage by hearing some of the better speakers use that rule.
