Boy Abunda Release Erick Santos
MANILA, Philippines — Artist-manager relationships are complicated enough with business interests and personal matters in between, but more so when it suffers a falling out that goes public.
In mid-September, word came out that Erik Santos had parted ways with Backroom, the management company that had taken care of his career since he won in the reality TV show, “Star in a Million.” Back then, Erik reportedly said he left due to changes in the management team within the firm, as reported on Bulletin Entertainment on Sept. 18.
Come Sept. 26, Erik’s manager, Boy Abunda, spoke out about the issue. He disputed reports that the latter left the management company and clarified that Backroom had released the singer/performer.
Speaking out in the Oct. 2 episode of “The Buzz” to put an end to the matter, Boy discussed the issue that erupted between him and Erik. For his part, Boy explained he had agreed to be interviewed to defend himself and Backroom from something that had seemingly gotten out of hand.
During the live interview with Charlene Gonzales, Boy declared, “Kami po ay nagka-ayos ni Erik. Kasagsagan ng bagyo, with humility and courage—and I give it to him—siya’y pumunta po sa bahay, nagpaliwanag. Inisa-isa namin ang aming mga diperensiya, ang aming mga hindi pinagkakaunawaan.”
He added, “It was difficult… mahirap na pag-uusap, lalo na nung umpisa. Medyo emosyonal… pero naayos. At naghiwalay kami nang maayos, at nagka-hingahan ng sama ng loob. Nailabas ko ang lahat.”
As a backgrounder, Boy shared that when he spoke to Erik for the first time after the latter was released from Backroom, he told his former talent he didn’t want to go into the details anymore. “Para hindi masyadong madugo ‘yung pag-uusap.”
He added, “Kasi ‘pag wala kang masyadong nabibitawang salita, mas mababaw… healing is easier. But I was wrong.”
Apparently, this lack of discussion led to more issues. As people talked more, much had been written, “hanggang nagka-pikunan nga. Hanggang nasaktan po ako, nasaktan siguro si Erik at ang mga tao sa aking munting opisina. Kaya lumala nang lumala.”
Boy noted that this had started two months ago, but they made no fuss about parting ways with his ward. Any time he was asked, he said, he never lied and told people Erik had been released by Backroom. Boy pointed out that the artist has the capacity to “take good care of himself,” and that he himself was “isa lamang [na] instrumento sa kanyang pagsikat.”
That said, he refused to pinpoint what had been most painful to him about this development. Boy said, “I will answer it in general terms… Alam mo ang respeto ng taong iginagalang mo ay mahalaga. And pagmamahal ng taong minamahal mo ay mahalaga. ‘Pag nasasaktan ka ng taong mahal mo at iginagalang mo, masakit.
