Cuss More, Live Longer: Part One
In 17th century the punishment for obscenity was to strap the culprit to the pillory and to put a seal of shame on their forehead. For a long time printed speech had strictly kept its pristine purity, until in 1862 the French author Victor Hugo dared to use the word “shit” in his novel “Les Miserables”.

According to the studies obscenity increases the threshold of tolerance to pain. Scientists explain this with the fact that the ability to curse and swear may have evolved in our ancestors as a method to increase aggression, while at the same time reduces the sensitivity to physical pain. American experts have established that even cursing in our thoughts can have identical effect.

Cursing is an analogue to the prehistoric language, formed in the dawn of the human evolution. The explanation: centuries ago the biological meaning of the cuss is not only to serve as a weapon against hostile behavior, but also a way to maintain a rating status quo. This can be achieved by demonstrating own aggression.
For example, the dominating male in a herd of anthropoids expressed his aggression by demonstrating the “excitedly raised” position of his sexual instrument. It is well known that inside a group of primates there is a strict and fierce hierarchy which allows only the leader to perform such demonstrations.

Hence, the “genital” aggression still exists in human society. But it exists not as some archaic imitation of copulation as a way to humiliate the weaker, but in a more evolved and modern variant, i.e. the respective indecent gestures and vulgar expressions.

Another reference to the ancient times is that swearing often mentions the female gender. In the basis of the cuss containing contemptuous evaluation of prostitutes and their illegally born children lie the same biological roots. As an insurance against unwanted genetic material inherited from previous males and against potential sexual rivals, the collective conscience of many nations still perceives a resistant image about the righteousness of chastity and condemns the indecent behavior of whores.

Really interesting. I sometimes wondered why some people have such a need to curse. This would explain a lot… it might be a way for the weaker and insecure to feel stronger and more confident.
