Does Language Influence Our Mind, or Does Our Mind Influence Language?
What do you think? Please comment.
If we look back at the beginning of humanity, no spoken languages existed. Primitive men used to communicate by signals and mimic, so obviously language couldn’t have been a decisive factor to influence the development of our ancestor’s minds. But as time went by, and humanity developed (and so did the human mind), the need for a new way of communication came up. Therefore the development of human’s mind really was a decisive factor for the development of a spoken language.
Nowadays the story is other, because we grew up learning a spoken language, if not two or three different ones. The more languages we learn, the more agile our mind becomes, so in this way we can certainly say that languages influences our minds. Logically the natural behavior of humans is to always have a constant change or development on culture, thoughts and technologies, and also on other fields, this leads to a reformation on languages. For example in science and technologies, the more we study one topic the more we find out about it and many new concepts came up and they have to get a name, which we have to invent and this extends our language.
In my personal opinion it isn’t correct to say that language influences our mind, neither that our mind influences our language. For me it’s correct to say that both ideas go hand in hand, and that there is always going to be a constant development on both, our language and our minds.
