Five Most Frequently Used Words

I think these must be the five most frequently used words in the English language.

1. The

It may seem simple, but this word is used even more than “a.” It was even used twice in the description of this article. Think about it: most times you hear a title or a noun in general, this article is used.

2. A

This is a more general form of the word “the.” It is used slightly less frequently than “the.”

3/4. Barack Obama

Technically, “Obama” is used more than “Barack” because of the media’s tendency for abbreviation. This set of words recently skyrocketed in usage, especially following November 4, 2008, when the two words possibly jumped ahead of “the” and “a.”

5. And

This is often used to join clauses, such as “I went to the inauguration to see Barack Obama and I enjoyed it.” This word is often used in conjunction with the other four most used words, but obviously not as often.

This is interesting and something I never stopped to consider. I live in Ontario Canada but still the words Barack Obama seem to be very popular words.

    Good piece.
