Insulting Personal Remarks From Scotland

A short list of some words that people from Scotland use often to insult others.

There are many words and phrases that people from Scotland use frequently to insult each other. They could be about characteristics or the personal appearance of the person being spoken about. One thing that can be said for such words is they can be very descriptive and work well when you would like to insult someone. Below you will find some examples of these words with an explanation of what they mean. You will notice that many have a very similar meaning, which proves how wide and varied the different words are that Scottish people use to say the same thing.

Bauchle: A relatively mild insult that describes either someone who is shaped in an odd way or is just deemed to be somewhat slovenly.

Bampot: Used to describe someone who is not quite right in the head. This could be because they are a bit stupid or just plain dangerous.

Bawheid: Implies that the person is daft or stupid, almost suggests that the persons head is filled with air like a ball.

Clatty: Someone who is clatty is best described as being dirty, whether it be by mud or just not washed.

Dobber: A slang term that describes an idiot.

Eejit: The Scottish way of saying idiot. Can also be used in the phrase eejit-heid to describe someone who is stupid.

Glaikit: Describes a person who is perhaps not the sharpest knife in the drawer. i.e. someone who is deemed to be lacking in the brain department. A rather stupid person.

Grotbag: Derived from the English word grotty which means someone who is dirty and unkempt.

Hackit: Describes a person who has no chance of ever being described as handsome or beautiful. Or could be used to describe someone who is deemed to be dirty and unwashed.

Midden: Used to either describe someone who has a certain lack of fashion sense or someone who looks as dirty as a tramp.

Manky: Refers to someone who has probably never hear of soap as they are deemed to have a problem with personal hygiene. Can also used to describe an article that is dirty.

Mockit: Same as ‘manky’, someone whose personal hygiene is really bad.

Numpty: If you are one sandwich short of a picnic, or a couple of cards short of a full deck then you would be a numpty. i.e. stupid.

Nyaff: To describe someone as a nyaff could be because of their diminutive stature, whether in height or just in attitude.

Tumshie: Or Tumshie-Heid, means a turnip. So call someone this and you are meaning that there brain is like a turnip and thus not too smart.

    Regionalisms are always fascinating. I like bawheid. In the states, southern people say eejit,too. Of course it sounds more like ‘ijit’, over here…

    I guess my visits to the hot content list seems to be a bit of irony, as I hope to have shut down that “Tumshie”, eye opener, comments like his just infuriate me. My slangs were quite clear in any countries context of insults. Again cool piece as I found your website and finding it too be very enjoyable. Great work!
