Some Common Filipino (Tagalog) Words, Phrases, Dialogues, Conversations and their English Translation

(Very Easy, and Useful)

*Quick Tip: Filipinos often use the courteous word “Po.” Use “Po” at the end of your statements to express respect or to say things more politely*

Common Answers:

O-o = Yes (*Opo – polite form of “Yes” said to elders or superiors)

Hindi = No

Wala = None

Mabuti = Good

Masama = Bad

To Point or Describe Things or Persons:

Ito = This

Iyan = That (with you)

Iyon = That (over there)

Mga ito = These

Mga iyan = Those (with you)

Mga iyon = Those (over there)

Akin = Mine

Kanya = His / Hers

Kanila = Theirs

Atin = Ours

Ako ito = It’s me. / This is me.

Ako ay = I am…

Siya ay = He / She is…

Sila ay = They are…

Kami ay = We are…

Kami = Us

Common Adjectives:

Maganda = Beautiful

Pangit = Ugly

To Name Persons:

Bata = Little Boy / Little Girl (stranger)

Manong = Big Brother (stranger)

Manang = Big Sister (stranger)

Ma-ma = Mister (stranger)

Ale = Miss / Mrs. (stranger)

Kuya = Big Brother (polite)

Ate = Big Sister (polite)

Bunso = Youngest Brother / Sister

Papah / Dadi / Tatay / Itay = Father

Mamah / Mami / Nanay / Inay = Mother

Lolo / Tatang = Grandfather

Lola / Nanang = Grandmother

Apo = Grandson / Granddaughter

Biyenan = Father-in-Law / Mother-in-Law

Tito / Tiyo = Uncle

Tita / Tiya = Auntie

Ninong = God-Father

Ninang = God-Mother

To Ask Questions:

Sino? = Who?

Ano? = What?

Bakit? = Why?

Paano? = How?

Magkano? = How much?

Ilan? = How many?

Alin? = Which one?

Saan? = Where?

Kailan? = When?

To Point Where:

Dito = Here

Diyan = There (with you)

Doon = (Over) There

To Say When:

Ngayon = Now / Today

Kahapon = Yesterday

Bukas = Tomorrow

Ngayong araw = This day / Today

Lunes = Monday

Martes = Tuesday

Miyercules = Wednesday

Huwebes = Thursday

Biyernes = Friday

Sabado = Saturday

Linggo = Sunday

Ngayong lingo = This week

Sa susunod na lingo = Next week

Noong nakaraang lingo = Last week

Ngayong buwan = This month

    I wonder what “ooooows!” means, when used as an answer to a question about how something was?
