Love: A Comparison Between Spanish and English Definitions

I usually write in Spanish, but I received the suggestion to translate my articles into english, specially this one. I want to give a try and please let me know if you can read it.

Love and Amor: Dictionary Definition

LOVE, according to an english dictionary is:

1. Sexual activities (often including sexual intercourse) between two people
2. Any object of warm affection or devotion
3. A deep feeling of sexual desire and attraction
4. Strong positive emotion of regard and affection

AMOR (Love in spanish) is defined in Spanish dictionary as “group of feelings that tie one person to another, or to things, ideas…”, as a result, I looked into the dictionary the meaning of “feeling” and we find:

1. Impression caused by spiritual things
2. Irrational and confusing feeling
3. Part of human being opposite to inteligence or reason
4. The way we feel, specially sad

Isn’t it interesting? Are we talking about the same word?

In Spanish “sexual” is not related at all withe the word “love”, and I don’t agree.

In English “love” sounds warm, affective, emotion…. in Spanish “love” is irrational, confusing, not clever, sad, spiritual….

I think love is not only sex, of course, because we feel love to our mother, father, sons and daughthers, to our pets….. and it doesn’t mean sex!!

But I don’t agree with spanish meanings where it sounds as if love was only sad, suffering, irrational, spiritual…….

How can the same word mean so different in two languages??
