Proof That English is a Really Silly Language

Every day, we use English without a second thought. Yet, if we took the time to think about what it is we’re saying we would realize how illogical the English language is.

After all, any language where I telephoned and booked to go bowling, but never telled my friends or taked them along has to be fairly silly. It may be unbelievable and unfair, but it can’t be undecisive, or even inreasonable.

As I keep writing this article, it may be getting longer and better, but it will never get interestinger or gooder. That’s another thing. I can make something smaller and it will be small, but make something better and it will be what? Bett??

Of course, there are rules that govern this chaos, but we seem to be unable to stick to them. So, my height and weight should be my hieght and wieght. A recipe should be said a ‘ree-sype’ if you look at it, unless you want to spell it resippi. And who on Earth thought that pseudonem could ever be said ’soo-don-im’?

Has anyone ever noticed that the letter c is really over rated? I can kuddle the kat and smoke a sigar without a c, although I would need one if I was in China.

Then we have the sayings. How can a fat chance and a slim chance be the same thing, but a wise man and a wise guy be opposites. Then you have cats and dogs falling from the sky when it rains, and have you ever seen anyone go green with envy?

The plot gets deeper when we realize that what we write can be totally different to what we mean. A stationary train is static, but a stationery train is made of paper and stamps. If I compliment a person I say something nice about them, whereas if I complement them then we go well together. To be evern more silly, if the time in New York is 1:58, then in Washington DC it’s two to two too.

Wrapping it all up, english is a very silly language when you look at it. So, I leave you with one last point to think about:

Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a apple.
