Readers’ Expectations

What does a reader wait from a text?

To write a text begins with the idea about that text, and at that very beginning the possibilities about the topic, subject, content, genre, how to get across the ideas, etc. are infinite. But the difficult part for writing a text is that reader’s expectations are infinite too. Nevertheless, there are basic requirements to satisfy this expectations, such as sentences well structured, clear and precise words, good spelling, correct punctuation, words used in a correct context, and so forth; that apart from the expectations that be interesting, amusing, and the list goes on and on.

Firstly,  the more interesting and amusing is the text, the more the reader will want to read. Not only that,  the reader will look for more author’s writings, for this knows how to manage the his or her taste.

On the other hand, to manage grammar skills is essential. When the reader approaches a text, approaches with some notions about punctuation, spelling, and so on; therefore, by finding the opposite this could be upset and to lose the interest in the text. Moreover, his or her attention could be directed to notice the mistakes, instead of focusing in the content of the text.

To be clear and precise is another essential aspect of writing. This is reached by a correct use of syntax, words in a correct context, to use the minimum quantity of words to express an idea, etc. If we do the opposite, we could dim the reader, besides to make the reading boring, tiresome, and difficult to follow.

In sum, at the moment of thinking and developing a writing we shouldn’t think the text just as a product from the writer, but as a product for the readers; therefore, we need to take into consideration their expectations. To do this by investigating the correct text, paragraphs, sentences, and words structures, it’s not only a way to turn the readers addicted to our writings, but an excellent way to respect them.
