The article devises an idea that humans can formulate statistical computations as compare to other living organisms such as animals. According to the researchers, consonants serve mainly to distinguish among words whereas vowels tend to carry grammatical information. Other scientists have the consensus that the language acquisition of language would be possible using the unique statistical machine of the brain. Within these discoveries, we can draw an idea that the study about language acquisition and processes has step into the next level.
To be quite honest, I don’t have the authority to say that those discoveries and researches were incorrect and superficial since I don’t have the vast knowledge about the linguistic processes especially when we are talking about brain. The role of consonant in identifying the words is very essential because most of the common types of syllable in language also have a consonant before the vowel, often represented as CV. For example the word “cat”, it has a structure of CVC, meaning the coda is present. Since they are closed syllables, we can identify its function as compared t a vowel “a’ which has the grammatical function. So to speak, humans have the ability to compute statistics between the consonants and vowels. Unlike the animals, they do not have the computational ability that will help them to distinguish consonants to vowels. As a result, they tend to generalize that consonants are just noise and radicals to be discarded.
It must also consider that the other researchers and scientist must conduct their study on the different speakers so that they could really prove that the calculating of consonants is a key to how brain processes language. Finally, we can conclude that language acquisition has been tested scientifically.
