The researchers found that preparing for exams or tests actually improve memory by making the brain produces a more efficient way to store and recall facts or information.
In particular, the brain generates the key words are called mediators that trigger memories or memory. It is not going to happen when just learning it.
This means that the brain remember more facts longer.
Dr. Katherine Rawson, who is a psychologist at Kent State University, said: “Following the exercise test, especially involving attempts to recall something from memory the brain can dramatically increase the chances that you can recall that information at a later time.
“Of the hundreds of experiments to find the influence of examinations on the learning process, it is surprising that we know so little why the examination of the brain to improve memory.”
Dr. Pyc and Rawson Mary who is a graduate of the University of Kent reported experiments which indicate that at least one reason why the test is good for memory is that the test supports the use of more effective encoding strategies.
Rawson gives the following illustration: “Suppose you try to learn foreign language vocabulary. In our study, we usually use a pair English-Swahili words like ‘wingu – cloud’. To learn how, you could just repeat back on yourself each once you learn it, but it was not the kind of effective strategies to put something in the brain memory.
“A more effective strategy is to develop a keyword that connects the foreign language word with a word of English. ‘Wingu’ sounds like ‘wing’, birds have wings (wings) and fly in the clouds (clouds). Of course this works only limited to the keywords that you produce. To be a useful keywords, you should be able to remember your password when you are given the foreign word later. also order that a useful keywords, you should be able to remember the words of English when you remember that keyword. “
