Sadlier Building an Enriched Vocabulary Vocab Lesson 12

Lesson 12 of the Sadlier "Building an Enriched Vocabulary" book. This is a commonly used book to study for SATs as well as often used in schools for instructional purposes. *Lesson comes with sentences for almost every word.

Vocab 12

1.       Dap-per (adjective)- neatly and stylishly dressed

à   Usage note- dapper only for men women called chic(pronounced sheek)

à   Arthur was a dapper dresser and stylish person

11.   De-fect(noun)- flaw or shortcoming; desert ones country or like for another

à   Usage notes-

1.       defective means flawed deficient means lacking

2.       the act of defecting is called a defection (country version)

15.   de-fer(verb)- to put off or post pone; yield to wishes or judgments of someone else.

à   Related forms- deferment, deferral, deference;(adjectives) deferential, deferent

à   Usage notes- deferment and deferral mean a temporary postponement of, or exemption from something (like jury duty). Deference indicates a willing or courteous submission to another person’s wishes or ides usually out of respect for the latter’s age, wisdom, or experience. The adjectives deferential and deferent mean “respectful”, as in “a differential attitude”.
