Slang

An article about the 1960’s slang.

Some of the shit that teenagers these days credit as “slang” is ridiculous. Take “motts” for instance. “Motts” is supposed to mean “sick” which is supposed to mean “clutch” which is supposed to mean “awesome”. But, to be fair, every decade has had its fair share of slang in the past. What particularly intrigues me is the slang that was used 50 years ago hasn’t even died out among teens today.

Exhibit A: (this is the only “Exhibit” but I feel that an “Exhibit” without a letter indicating what it is, is like a lost cat without a ball of yarn to play with…umm uhh, yeah? I don’t know, my creative spirits are a bit low today so that’s the best analogy you’re gonna get…)

Slang of the 1960’s

  • Bad: Awesome
  • Badass: A tough guy, someone you don’t want to mess with.
  • Bummed Out: Depressed
  • Cool: Nice
  • Cop A Feel: Touch a girl inappropriately, and pretend it was an accident.
  • Crash: Go to bed, Go to sleep
  • Go all the way: Have sex with
  • Groovy: Nice, Cool
  • Hip: Very cool, in style
  • Hook: To steal
  • Knocked up: Pregnant
  • Lay it on me: Say what you want to say
  • Pad: Someone’s house
  • Right on: I agree, I concur
  • Stoked: Excited
  • Stuck up: Conceited
  • Stud: Handsome
  • Zits: Pimples

Already, you must have noticed that a good majority of those words are still in use today. Not much has changed in the last 50 years in that sense. Even with a new century, teens are still doing the same old shit they’ve always done. And that is: being teenagers.

Very interesting article. As an English teacher in Korea I am always interested in how slang is picked up in another country. I remember a lot of this slang from the 60s
