Some French Vocabulary

A list of French words and their English definition.

I am going to help you learn some French vocab since now there are a lot of people moving to different countries so learning French might come in handy some day. In this article i will help you how to say the date, the time, and what time is it. This article also helps saying numbers days and months.

Numbers (note: when saying the ‘x’ is six or dix or any number or word with an ‘x’ in it it makes the sound of an ’s’)

un(e) – one
deux – two
trois – three
quatre – four
cinq – five
six – six
sept – seven
huit – eight
neuf – nine
dix – ten
onze – eleven
deuze – twelve
trieze – thirteen
quatorze – fourteen
quinze – fifteen
seize – sixteen
dix-sept – seventeen

quarante – forty
cinquante – fifty
soixante – sixty              (from 70-99 it gets really hard you have to do multiplication and addition)
soixante-dix – seventy      (in the seventies you just add a number to soixante)
quatre-vingt – eighty          (in the eighties-nineties you multiply 4 by 20 then add the number)
quatre-vingt-dix – ninety

months

janvier – Jan.
février – Feb.
mars – March
avril – April
mai – May
juin – June
julliet – July
août – Aug.
septembre – Sept.
octobre – Oct.
novembre – Nov.
décembre – Dec.

When saying a date you would use these words “aujourd’hui il est trente julliet”. That means ”today it is July 30Th” you can also make it so you are saying “it is July 30Thtoday” either way will work for French. If you would like to say “my birthday is july 5″ then you would say “mon anniversaire est cinq julliet” anniversaire means any kind of special thing that comes around every year.

Time: When saying times it is a little difficult because the way you say it is nothing like the way you say it in English. In English you you say “it is eight thirty” for example. In french you would say “il est huit heures trente” which literally means “it is eights hours thirty” to say any time of the hour past thirty you would have to subtract it from the next hour so if you want to say “it is 8:31″ you would say “il est neuf heures moins vingt-neuf” which literally means “it is 9 hours minus 29″

When trying to speak or write french a lot of the times it is really hard since the words in the sentence are arranged in a different order for example if we asked someone what time it was we would say “what time is it” when they ask it they are literally saying “it is what hour” translated “il est quelle heures” so the verb is before the subject when in English the verb is after the subject.

Thanks for the French lesson. I’ve had three years in school and love to go over it again.
