Struggling Readers: Where to Begin?
This list of letters and their sounds is a starting point for struggling readers.
I doubt that as adults, we can remember the point when we first learned to read. In order to help children who are struggling to read, it is important to go back to the beginning. No matter how basic it may seem, this list is an important way to diagnose or rule out possible reading gaps or difficulties.
This list is intended to help parents go back to the very beginning of reading – letter/sound correspondence. To begin, use the sounds in isolation. If you have an alphabet poster, alphabet cards or refrigerator magnets, you can create games to drill these sounds in isolation.
