Texting: Does It Do The English Language any Good?

I am writing to you today about the rapid decline of the English language through use of annoying Text-Messaging lingo and "Smilies."

Text messaging. It is the most popular thing since sliced bread.  Will it the downfall of the Western civilization? Will it cause all humans to revolt? Will it make anarchy widespread throughout the masses? The answer to all these questions is no. It simply will not.

But on the other hand, It will destroy the English language. Here’s a true life example, something actually sent to me:

“Dud 2day i had 2 tak a test in engish an i think i failed it”

Hmm, I wonder why. Let’s analyze this for a second. Dud? 2day? 2? tak? engish? what is engish? No punctuation?

It’s not as if text messaging in itself is bad, but it further spread of it has made “txt talk” much more accepted. Of course this all won’t really cause a difference in spoken English, the written part is an art-form and is something that should be taken more seriously.

And finally, as well as thankfully, a wide variety of phones with full keyboards such as the “enV” Touch, and the T-mobile Sidekick, and phones with full keyboard simulators like the Motorola Droid and the iphone 3gs have allowed us to stop using this atrocious English by letting us easily type in whole words. So in the end if you have any family members needing a phone for Christmas, I would choose one of these, if not for them but for the English language. Please, we all appreciate.

Hmmm… Good thoughts, honestly I think it’s a big conspiracy theroy. I have never ever met a person that talks in the stereotypical “text talk”

But good thoughts, keep on writing.

Working in a school setting, I have seen this atrocious writing style over and over again. What amazes me is how many adults are progressing to utter laziness as well.

Your articles are fresh and crisp. You might want to proofread before submitting; there are some minor errors that interrupt the smooth flow of your work.
