The oldest treasure of written russian date back to the 11th century.
Earlier examples have been preserved, or are as yet undiscovered. The alphabet of all slavic languages that is used today, with some minor differences, by russians, ukrainians, belorussians, serbs, and bulgarians, was created in the middle of the ninth century by the brothers Cyril and Methodius. The ware two monks involved in translating byzantine church texts ( written in greek) into the slavic script.
This alphabet consisted of 30 letters- some borrowed from the greek alphabet and others specifically invented to convey the sounds of the Slavic languages that did not exist in greek. Cyril and Methodius ware canonized for their great achievement. When Kievan Rus adopted Christianity in the 10th century, it gained not only books from Byzantium written in greek, but also books from Bulgaria written in the Slavic script- the cyrillic alphabet of Cyril and Methodius.
This alphabet became the basis of the written russian language. The cyrillic alphabet was preserved through the course of centuries in both manuscript form and the first printed books.
Under tsar Peter I , the so-called civilian script, which was simpler and more convenient for printing, was introduced. This is the script used today.
