"In fact, it is easier for a native English speaker to learn Mandarin than for a native Chinese speaker to learn English"

Im not sure if i agree with this, i agree that the grammar is far easier but the Tones more than make up for that at the beginning, in the middle and at the end. Also the character are painstakingly time consuming at the start of your learning.

It depends what you mean by learn English or learn Chinese.

i know many foreign speakers whose mandarin is excellant but dont sound chinese therefore having to use grammar to make their meaning understood. In china there a famous foreigner because he can speak like a native speaker ; dashan ( chinese name)
Why is he so famous if it that easy to learn Chinese?

- I have learned English and i am learning Mandarin in shanghai at the moment.

Great tips! <br />
I'd also like to add that one should define their own personal goals for the language and what they plan to use it for. Do you just want to learn enough for traveling? Basic conversation? or do you want to become totally fluent at a college level? It might sound obvious, but some people languish and get frustrated because they haven't really thought about what they plan to use the language for. Keeping this in mind will help you make the best use of your study time, money, and keep you persistent.
