When Learning Vocabulary

How ESL learners should approach learning vocabulary.

The use of vocabulary is important when advancing up the scale in English proficiency. Most students are either unaware of it key role or else think that the language can be learnt with a minimal concentration on new words that can add color and clarity to otherwise ordinary forms of speech. The question the learner should ask himself is of course how much time he is willing to set aside to learn how to be more expressive when he speaks. The same can be said for applying the new knowledge into writing documents and answering emails.

Learning vocabulary is easier than the individual thinks and he has to be open to trying a number of methods so that at least one will provide him with a means of acquiring new words with the least amount of bother. He can be told that memory exercises should be done as that goes hand in hand with acquiring new words just as it would be beneficial to remember parts of speech, idiomatic expressions and phrasal verb usages.

The student should be told that although writing is not necessarily part of a conversational class taking notes on new words helps to consolidate the material especially if the student is more visual in his approach. The teacher should still practice phonetic exercises of word families with the learner as that helps the student recall words on the basis of sound in addition to knowing groups of words on the basis of meaning.

There are a number of means to ensure that new words will be acquired and put into use but it all boils down to the need of the pupil to be proactive in his approach and to try means that he has otherwise ignored or never applied.
