Words Together

by A Wallbank in Languages, March 27, 2009

Some words come in pairs… or should!

Introduce these pairs into your daily vocabulary. Once you start using them together you will never use them alone again, I promise!

Arrogant and Ignorant – In general, arrogance implies ignorance, whereas ignorance does not necessarily imply arrogance… and so the symmetry of nature is shattered!

Confound and Confuse – a worthy toast to make on the eve of battle! Or a curse to mutter when looking over the features on a newly purchased mobile phone… they get smaller, but they sure don’t get simpler!

Exactly and Precisely – why use one when you can use both! Hammer your point down clearly; be firm!

Definite and Definitive – particularly fun to describe a difference: “…this diversity is definitely due to the definitive differences deduced by the dedicated and detailed observations of the ducks” (quoted from the well known duck expert who first swallowed a whole egg, of course!).

Completely and Absolutely – use these together to show your agreement/loyalty is not in the least tentative; or use this phrase to strike the ultimate sarcastic blow… it all depends on the tone of your voice.

So, do you see what I mean???

I loved this article only because I love words. When I was younger I would literally try to learn as many vocab words as I could. I had stacks and stacks of flash cards.

Nice, often I am sarcastic with most of these words!

Nice job. Though I’m kinda partial to ‘very unique’, ‘almost pregnant’, and ’slightly inebriated’! :)
    Thanks,
