Abortion: Are You Pro-Life or Pro-Choice?

by WilliamDew in Law, June 21, 2009

Abortion is an incendiary issue in the United States, and with the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller by a disgruntled protester, it has again been thrust into public discourse. I will discuss my opinion on abortion, and I invite you share yours.

Abortion is a volatile issue. And to be truthful, I’m not really a person who has given it much thought. However, the recent murder of Dr. George Tiller, an abortion provider at a clinic in Kansas, has brought this issue back into my attention. I should also mention that I am male, as gender seems to be important to some people with regard to the whole abortion issue.

I will state right now that I am pro-choice. However, I am absolutely against late-term abortions, unless there are extenuating circumstances and the mother is at medical risk. It seems that if you were going to choose an abortion, there isn’t a good excuse to not have already done it by that time. I do believe that women should be allowed to choose, just not that late within the pregnancy. I am interested in hearing the opinions of other people, and when they feel abortion is okay, if at all, and why?

The difficulty for allowing abortions is in deciding when the pregnancy is too far along. Obviously, pro-life advocates state abortion is never okay, but pro-choice supporters must be able to provide good arguments for when these timelines are and when abortions should be allowed or disallowed. Should it be when the baby (or fetus) feels pain? When it can survive outside the womb? What do you think?

I obviously don’t have answers to these questions, and I don’t think that any person does. But, I invite you to send your opinions on abortion. Are you pro-choice or pro-life? Does your religion play a strong role in that opinion? Provide your thoughts.
