Can Hanging Laundry Outside Get You a Ticket?

The green movement has led to many people hanging their laundry out to dry in the sun. Environmentalists are pleased with the growing trend. Local officials and some residents are not so happy.

Some people have complained about residents hanging their clothes outside. They say it looks like trailer trash lives in the house. Many homeowner associations have rules prohibiting clotheslines. Some residents complain about a line of “unmentionables” hanging in yards.

A push for rights to hang clothes outside has been spearheaded by a group called Project Laundry List. Alexander Lee, the group’s executive director, points out that people can save a lot of money and reduce carbon emissions by not using their washers and dryers. A family of 5 that hangs out their laundry can save over $80 a month in electricity.

Some states such as Florida and Colorado have recently passed laws to stop local authorities from fining residents that use clotheslines. Several other states are considering adopting similar measures.

The biggest opponents seem to be the homeowners associations. It is estimated that 20% of the people who live in condominiums and townhouses are under some type of community restrictions.  No-hanging rules are usually included in the list of community regulations. They claim that people do not want to see other peoples ‘laundry hanging everywhere.

The battle of laundry may come to the court systems. Until then the situation is still hanging in the air.

No matter what you do there will always be someone, somewhere who has to complain.
