Criticism of the Law in Rural Communities
As a police officer of twelve years I have finally thrown in the towel. My love for the job and all the details involved did not fit into what the puzzle has become.
Small communities need enforcement balance with community policing. These small agencies have missed the mark.
Small town politics play a large role in these communities. Appointed police chiefs and county sheriffs are to busy kissing someone else’s butt and not focusing on their community. Most have lost their focus and not only allow, but condone and enforce selective law enforcement. You see the city councilman’s son arrested for possession of drugs. The boy is immediately released on a PR bond long before the officer is even finished with his paper work. He never makes it to court and later one finds the charges are dropped due to insufficient evidence. The boy down the road is arrested and – smack! He is going down.
That story is sad and so common everyday. Selective law enforcement. It sickens me these people are put into such an authoritative position, which they use to keep their foot in the door. If they truly cared about what they are doing for a living, they would make just, honest, and fair positions.
Next scenario. Officer arrests bad boy for drinking and driving (or any other arrest able offense). Oops election year! The boy was a relative of the incoming sheriff. Find a new job Mr Police Officer. You arrested the wrong boy! Now you have another jerk running the roads knowing he can get away with almost anything. And you also have an officer without a job and a termination on his record. Politics and selective law enforcement.
The remaining officers allowed to remain with the department have just learned a lesson from their co-worker: enforcing selective law enforcement keeps you currently employed.
New sheriff is in town. He was placed in his authoritative position by popular vote. The new sheriff certainly wants to remain in office as long as possible to be vested with the agency and receive most likely a second retirement. The new sheriff decides to do nothing and advises his officers to do the same. A couple years down the road and your department is filled with fat lazy cops that eat and wave as folks are driving twice the posted speed through the school zone with a meth lab in the back of their truck.
Can’t their be a happy medium? Good grief, these people are carrying guns while they have bavarian crème dripping off their lapel.
And then you have the Gestapo. How these guys remain in their positions is beyond me! I suppose it all points to selective law enforcement. They write tickets to everyone in town. Rolling stops, no turn signal, just a few miles over the speed limit, and prey on the kids and the elderly. Oh but they don’t stop there – they have to be a rude jerk while their inking you. No community policing! And guess what their fat chief or sheriff is doing? Kissing the mayors butt. In these communities, the townspeople hate the law enforcement. And during any investigation, no body is giving any information. These officers have no report with their community.
Conclusion: there has to be a balance between enforcement and community policing. As voters remember to look for people that will enhance your community. You don’t want swarms of debauchery plaguing the town while Donut Dave is b. s’ing at the corner mart. Nor do you want some psycho in black bdu’s yelling at you while he is searching your car while you and your two kidos lay on the sidewalk face down in front of Washington Elementary School. Think people think, while your brat gets the “deal of a lifetime” just to go screw up two months later – somebody else is getting the screwing! Put people in office that are going to do their jobs!

Our situations are just different maybe because we don’t live in the same country.

Please join me in requesting all communities to require police to address the public as “citizen”. The psychological event that happens when that is required will aid both society and the police.
