How to Pay a Ticket Without Losing Demerit Points

Okay, now I don’t condone doing anything illegal on the road, and the last thing I’d want to promote with this post is reckless driving, but sometimes bad things happen to good people, and since we’re in a recession the last thing you want to lose is your driver’s license as a result of losing too many demerit points. Now firstly, this is not a free ticket (mind the pun) you will need the cash to pay off the ticket.

I should point out at this point that I live in Toronto and will not guarantee that this will work everywhere. The point is it is free to try, easy to try and completely legal. That being said, here’s what to do.

  1. Pay off the original ticket with a cheque that is one or two dollars more than the actual amount of the ticket. So let’s say you get a speeding ticket for $80, in this case you send the DMW a cheque for $82. Now the DMV is obligated to send you a cheque back for one or two dollars.
  2. The trick here is that most cheques you receive from the DMW will read “This transaction will not be processed until this cheque is deposited“. So what do you do? Simply don’t cash the cheque. Now when I say this I don’t mean to rip it up and throw it in the garbage. Always keep it on file. As long as that cheque from the DMW isn’t cashed, the transaction will not be completed, argo you will not lose demerit points.
  3. If ever the DMW calls asking you why you didn’t cash the cheque. Just say you lost it. Easy.

And there you have it. You paid your tickets with losing demerit point. Awesome!
