I Need a Good Lawyer

If ever you require the services of a lawyer it is important to research the market and find the one most suited to your situation and budget. Follow these small tips and you are off to a good start.

Mortgage and Real estate issues require the services of lawyers. Again ask pointed questions and research as many as you can before choosing the right one for you. Cost is important and ask about any hidden fees.

So where do you start?

Well apart from knowing what it is you require a lawyer to represent you for, the most serious two questions you need to ask are: How much are they and just how good are they?

Once you have ascertained the cost and their reputation and feel comfortable, the next important step you need to remember is this:

THEY WORK FOR YOU!

Now that is always something that you should have in the back of your mind. A lawyer will always, if they are worth their salt, point out the legal aspects of any case and advise you as such. After all that is what they are there for. But at the end of the day, despite their advice, if you disagree with what they suggest no matter how strongly they feel, you can object and they will carry out your instructions or should.

Also find a lawyer who will do what they say, not just talk about it. That means that they put the effort in. It is also worth bearing in mind that if let’s say you require a lawyer for a criminal charge, that you don’t just leave them to do all the work. Remember lawyers are busy people. Yes they get paid lots, but they also do lots and for lots of different people! You are not just the centre of their world so don’t kid yourself you are, despite you thinking and rightly believing you should be right about now!

So any paperwork, any evidence, anything that requires close scrutiny then request a copy and take it home and scrutinise it yourself. In other words don’t just leave it to your lawyer. Yes whilst you are paying them and perhaps paying them an awful lot, bear in mind that two sets of eyes and two heads combined are better than one. After all you may note something he or she missed. So build up a working relationship with your legal representative. You may well thank yourself you did at the end of the day!

Of course it helps to keep up the friendship. But your lawyer is NOT your friend…well not how we usually look at friends anyway. YOU are paying them for a service, not a friendship, so don’t kid yourself otherwise and become complacent. You want your lawyer to be ruthless and win your case, not hold your hand and be your mate.

Don’t forget to shop around. Many lawyers are listed on the Internet these days and some sites even offer price comparisons, much like the sites exist for car and home insurance. Some lawyers offer a free 30 minute consultation so go along to a few if you have time before you make your final choice.

Next bear in mind you want your lawyer to keep you appraised of everything and that means them having a competent secretary or support network around them so if the are away on another case, information can be relayed to you quickly and effortlessly.

Whatever your requirements are always take into account the above before choosing one. After all, you wouldn’t just rush and buy the first coat or pair of shoes you saw now would you?
