Laptops are our digital identity and most of the theft takes place when we are out of our house travelling places. This doesn’t mean that our data is completely safe when we are at home, but yes, the theft risk does go up when we are out. To avoid this problem you may consider leaving your laptop back home. This might sound impossible but you may still be able to manage. To remain in touch and sending and receiving mails you may use your iPhone or the Blackberry or the computers you come across at the hotels and business places you visit. Bet here still you should be careful and aware of the information you do input.
You may also limit yourself carrying the amount of data which you will necessarily need. All the information should not be fed into your laptops. Don’t obviously put unnecessary data into your hard drive. Avoid keeping your child’s Security Numbers within the contacts manager or spreadsheet details of investment account. If you are having an encrypted VPN network with the company you work for, delete the files and folders from the corporate network the moment you have reached your destination which may be the workplace, hotel, or meeting.
Always use very strong passwords to protect your computer from hackers. Passwords help lock our computers so be sure you use an alphanumeric one so that it would be a hard work for the hacker interested in you. A long password with a minimum of eight characters is advisable.
Thus a little attention from your side can save you a lot of trouble and money. With increasing cyber crime, you should watch every step that you take.
