Making a Will: FAQ

Find out when and how to write a will, and everything else you need to know.

Q- When’s the best time to make a will?

A;- Wills are like most other things really. Tuesdays are often a good day as they are generally quiet. Before lunch is best, especially in this office. Avoid Friday afternoons if at all possible.

Q:- How should I write my will?

A;- This is a classic ’will related’ question. One thing to remember is try NOT to panic. Problems can start when people see the fancy fonts on the front of a will in WH Smiths and think ’crickey do I have to be able to write my will like that?’ As a result many potential will makers waste a good deal of time and money taking expensive evening classes in calligraphy and there’s really no need. On the other hand for God’s sake don’t just scribble! Take your time over it.

Q:- Who should I leave my money to?

A:- There’s no doubt at all that your relatives will be expecting something. Especially the needy ones. But please do not feel obliged in any way. You don’t have to leave them anything. Oh no. It could all go to a friend or a work colleague or better still a kindly professional who has taken the trouble to help you with some good sound advice from time to time. Failing all of the above it must, by law, go to a nearby cat’s home I’m afraid. Like the one I run for example.

Q:- Where should I store my will?

A:- Everyone has to store their will somewhere,. That’s just the way it is I’m sad to say. The real trick is to store it in a cool dry place well away from any pipes that are likely to burst.

Q:- Can I copy off somebody else’s will?

A:- This sort of thing is much more common than one might think. The simple answer is that there is no real reason why you can’t copy somebody else’s will. Providing of course that they have exactly the same assets as yourself and are giving their money away to the same group of people. If this is the case then there is no problem as far as I can make out.
