Making a Will: FAQ
Find out when and how to write a will, and everything else you need to know.
Q:- When you make out a will should you mark the occasion in any way?
A:- I’m very glad that this has come up. My colleagues at Bloom Bloom Henderson & Bloom often laugh at me because I ring a loud bell whenever a will is signed in my office. They’re laughing because, quite frankly, no you don’t have to mark the occasion at all. But I choose to you see. Indeed if you were to come to me then the bell ringing would be compulsory. Ear muffs are provided for a small additional fee because the noise is extremely loud
Q:- I can’t find my will. Is this a problem?
A:- It could be. These are often referred to in the trade as ‘Lost wills’. It’s always best to put wills away somewhere you will be able to put your hands on them fairly quickly. Hence the expression ’where there’s a will there’s away’.
Q:- I’ve written my will in French. How cool is that?
A:- Not very cool at all really. In fact wills written in French are largely frowned upon especially in parts of Cornwall where, quite frankly, they don’t need much of an excuse to frown at anything.
Q:- How many more questions do you think you’ll need about wills?
A:- About two at least I’m afraid.
Q:- Some people make a ‘video will’ where they ‘talk’ to their relatives ‘from the grave’. Often leading to all sorts of goings on including murders or a quest to accomplish some given tasks in return for their inheritance. Are there any advantages to this?
A:- By advantages I take it you mean ‘tax’ advantages. There are no tax advantages in making such a will. But aside from tax issues these videos can be a fun way of telling people they’re getting nothing. Or, as you say, you can put loads of complicated hurdles in their way before they get their money. But no …. as far as tax goes I’m not really sure what you’re getting at.
Q:- That was a long question wasn’t it?
A:- Yes but then wills are rather complex.
