Our Inhumane Prison System
We claim to be humanitarian while allowing inhumane treatment of our incarcerated.
Guantanamo lives in American prisons. The practice of putting inmates in isolation, or the hole, for weeks or months, and even years at a time, for minor and petty infractions, such as talking back to a guard, wearing a jacket where it is not allowed, or God forbid, making a complaint against the establishment, can result in severe punishment.
Mental and physical tortures are barbaric methods of dehumanizing a person. This cruel torture of the mind is no different than waterboarding or other mind control tortures. Where are the human rights of those who are already locked up? Once the key turns in the prison lock, an inmate is striped of “all rights,” and are treated as less than human.
Criminal Justice officials are given full authority to treat inmates as they wish. This absolute control over men and women FORCED INTO SUBMISSION, easily grows into “Abuse of power.” Evil takes over, and nothing is done about it. No one oversees, or investigates all the inhumane acts they commit on inmates. If the inmates dare to complain about, or report these abuses, they are tossed into solitary for years as punishment. This inhumane treatment often leads to mental illness or insanity. That in itself should be considered a crime. We call ourselves “Civilized,” yet we continue to allow these torture tactics to exist in our own country.

so very true, the sad thing is that many folks don’t care unless someone in their family ends up in the prison system. It is sad! The whole prison system needs to be changed.

Frankly, there are times when solitary is a very good and healthy place to be – relatively speaking. I do not disagree with you, but unfortunately there is no blanket right and wrong – except for the fact that the whole prison system needs reformatting to something more useful. That is definitely so!
