In order to have success with paralegal jobs, you need to have great attention to detail and well developed organizational skills. These are the same skills required in successful corporate secretaries.

In order to have success with paralegal jobs, you need to have great attention to detail and well developed organizational skills.  These are the same skills required in successful corporate secretaries.  If you think you’d enjoy working for highly motivated business people and running a front office, this could be a wonderful alternative to working as a paralegal.

The duties of a corporate secretary are similar to the clerical duties of a paralegal.  Answering the phones, greeting visitors, filing paperwork, and maintaining an appointment schedule are all shared components of the two professions.  The difference between the two is the environment; paralegals work primarily for law firms, and corporate secretaries work for corporate headquarters, government agencies or non-profit organizations.

Having a paralegal certificate can allow you to expand your job search to include corporate secretary jobs.  There aren’t usually any strict educational requirements for corporate secretaries, but employers are always impressed by a degree or paralegal certificate.  If you have completed course work in typing, business law, or business information systems, these things will also increase your eligibility for alternative careers to paralegal jobs.

Individuals aspiring to work in the secretarial or administrative assistance fields will experience an average job outlook for these jobs.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, these positions may undergo a growth of about 9% by 2016 with the average salary at $27,450 annually.  This is a great field for someone seeking an alternative to paralegal work.
