Jane Clementine Rizzoli of Rizzoli and Isles is a role model. Rizzoli is a homicide detective for the Boston Police Department.
Her partner in the department is Barry Frost, and her past partner Vince Korsak, who often also works on her investigations. Her best friend is Maura Isles who is the Chief Medical Examiner.
Rizzoli is a tomboy. She grew up being the eldest sister horsing around and getting into scraps with her two younger brothers. Of Italian middle class descent, her father a plumber, and her mother a homemaker, she was better at helping her father with plumbing then helping her mother in the kitchen.
Maura Isles, adopted, by a wealthy family and very much the lady, is a very much unlikely best friend. Rizzoli and Isles often do a lot with each other in their free time. Isles in many ways have been adopted into the Rizzoli family, helping Jane’s mother when she needed a place to stay when Rizzoli’s parents divorced. She and Jane get along very well because Jane is intelligent. You wouldn’t know it considering she graduated from a junior college. Isles often provides her with the best of clues that get her that much closer to her killer. Isles is the sister Rizzoli never had.
Rizzoli helps her brother who is on the Boston PD who wants to be a detective like his older sister, to learn what he can, by assisting sometimes on her cases. Jane can be relied on giving her mother a hard time because her mother mothers her too much. Rizzoli wrote letters to her youngest brother who served time in jail because she despite the fact she works for the police department she is a sister first. Jane cares about her family.
Rizzoli does what is necessary to catch her murderer. She will go as far as shooting herself if she gets a murderer off the streets. She is dedicated to her work. She can be relied on to do her job, even when she is transferred to a different department. She takes it personally when she is investigated by internal affairs.
