Should Steroids be Legalized?

Is it necessary to ban steroids? If adults can choose to smoke cigarettes then why can’t an adult choose to harm their body with steroids?

Beyond the bad influence pros using steroids would provide, is the destruction to an athlete’s body that is caused by using performance enhancing drugs. Many professional players are faced with psychological and emotional problems, testicular atrophy, libido issues, and deterioration of muscles and bones. Some athletes claim “it is my body, my choice.” That may be true, but it is the responsibility of the sports organization to ensure the safety of their players. You would not want Jeff Gordon riding without a seatbelt because it allows him to steer better on the track. In the same way you don’t want athletes taking harmful drugs because they want to be better at the sport. There are much safer ways to improve a persons talent.

There is no doubt that an athlete on steroids is a better player. But this is at a cost to the opponents they go up against in a game. No one wants to play against someone who is better than them because of a pill they take. This goes against the nature of the game, especially in baseball. Babe Ruth made his records with no performance enhancing drugs. In fact he was constantly drinking and eating horrible foods. He is now the epitome of what is the nature of baseball. Baseball should be played by players who get their muscle the all natural way. That is the history of the game and that should be the future of the game.

Steroids need to be banned in all professional sports. They can easily destroy an athlete’s body and his life. They provide a horrible example to young athletes which lead them down a road of abuse. Steroids give favor to the players that use them and in the end they destroy the true nature of the game. Do not allow steroid use to continue.

Nice piece. Steroids, like most drugs, have a list of pros and cons. As a pharmacist I would like to see regulations changed so that a body builder could go to a sports medicine Dr. and get an Rx: this would allow the Dr. to periodically measure liver and kidnty functions. These are serious drugs but can be safely if both the patient and Dr. are welll educated in their use.
    Thanks,

I agree with you. Players in a game whether professional or not, should come to it with their natural strength. Spectators are not interested in seeing which player has the better drug, for that is what it comes down to when players are taking drugs. You have made the point very well.

It depends on if you want to hit a baseball 500 feet. Or put 300 pounds of muscle on a 5ft-10inch frame. Or run faster than any human has ever run. If so then we should legalize them. God point.

Good stuff. It seems like it comes down to points of choice versus how responsibility we have to take care of those who won’t or can’t take care of themselves. I like your topic picks. I hope they have been successful.
