Should the Bible be Used for Swearing the Truth?
Should this practice continued to be used in our courts, and with our political officials at swearing in ceremonies?
The Bible should not be used any longer for swearing to tell the truth in court, or in political ceremonies. As much as this country bickers over the separation of State and Religion, it seems ironic that we still continue to have swearing in ceremonies over the Bible at all.
With corruption being as it is in politics, it seems sacrilegious to continue using the Bible to swear the truth over. This country was founded in the belief that religious freedom was a right to all citizens. Being a melting pot of many religions, it becomes discriminatory to use a Bible as the base, when other books of religion are used by people of different faiths. For example: The Tora for the Jewish people, and the Karon for the Muslims.
If our government was faithful to the word of God in the Bible, they would obey his commandments. If that were to happen the world would not be in the chaos it is now in. Our leaders have no intentions of following what the Bible says we should do, and how we should act toward others.
Prosecutors and Judges have become arrogant and self righteous with their limitless powers to abuse their authority. No one can truly trust their honesty any more. They rule as if they are Gods themselves. Prosecutors manipulate and twist the truth in any way they can to win a conviction. When police write up false reports, and the person doing the convicting lies, why expect the accused to tell the truth, simply by swearing on a Bible?
The swearing process has become a mockery to what this Nation was built and founded on. Our government refuses to feed the hungry, house the homeless, and free the innocent from prison; they are NOT obeying the will of God. When our politicians vote to kill by way of the death penalty, and by starting wars for their own gain, how can we trust that they are truthful?
We see the words “In God we Trust” on all our currency. The words should read, “In money we trust.” We all know that the more money one has, the more power they also have. This power gives them control over others. Swearing on the Bible does not wash away the sins of those who lie and corrupt.

well done!
Many people are NOT Christians so the Bible means nothing to them, and even those who are can simply lie and ask for forgiveness later.

Very thought provoking. I am not sure where I stand on this issue.

There are a lot of issues for huge debate in the piece. Is the society that kills in the name of justice as sinful as the killer? Regarding the main theme, if an individual lives in a moral vacuum (those in government are collective individuals) then swearing on anything becomes meaningless. It’s a sad indictment that those in power often apply rules to others that they fail to keep themselves – look at some of the moral dishonesty and arrogance that is currently within many individuals within the British Government. I could go on…..

An atheist would swear truth on a copy of Playboy. It’s all a joke. A liar will lie, book be damned.

As others have stated, liars will lie regardless of the book. However, I feel that part of the problem is that we are getting rid of too many of our founding fathers\’ beliefs. This nation was founded on the Christian belief that all men are created equal and free to worship any god any way they chose. We\’ve already tossed prayer out of schools and other public places, can\’t publicize the Ten Commandments, or nativity scenes at Christmas time, and every year there\’s a big fuss about the phrase Merry Christmas. The list goes on and on. Should we really toss the Holy Bible out of our courtrooms too? This is really thought provoking stuff!
